Sculptra is an injectable filler to treat facial volume loss, wrinkles, and folds. Its active ingredient is a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that stimulates collagen production in the skin. Unlike other fillers that provide immediate results, Sculptra works gradually over time as the body’s collagen production is boosted; this results in a more natural-looking improvement in skin texture and volume that can last up to two years! [1] Patients looking to volumize or for facial feminization, particularly those looking to contour their cheeks, temples, and other areas of the face, will feel at home when they visit Nubo Spa.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a substance used in various medical applications and devices and soft-tissue contouring. PLLA is a non-surgical alternative to facial fat grafting, with the ability to provide volumetric expansion to volume-deficient areas gradually over time.

Unlike other dermal fillers, which focus on correcting specific facial deficiencies such as lines, and folds, PLLA is designed to expand volume-deficient areas. As we age, our skin loses several key components contributing to a youthful, full, and plump appearance. The loss of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, as well as changes in bone structure and fat distribution, can lead to a loss of facial volume over time.

Other factors contributing to facial volume loss include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Diet
  • Genetics

More About Poly-L-Lactic Acid

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) is a synthetic polymer made from a biodegradable, biocompatible substance called lactic acid. Lactic acid is a natural substance produced by the body during normal metabolic processes and is also found in certain foods.

To create PLLA, lactic acid is first extracted from natural sources, such as cornstarch, and purified to create a high-purity lactide monomer. The lactide monomer is then polymerized, or linked together, through ring-opening polymerization, which creates a long-chain polymer molecule.

Depending on the intended use, the resulting PLLA polymer can then be processed into various forms, such as a powder or gel. In the case of Sculptra, the PLLA is formulated into a sterile, injectable suspension that can be changed to have different strengths and break down naturally. Scientists can use it to make “scaffolds” with tiny holes designed to stimulate collagen production. [2]

How Does Sculptra Stimulate Collagen?

Collagen and elastin are proteins that give skin its structure and elasticity. As we age, the production of these proteins decreases, causing the skin to become thinner and less elastic; this can lead to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of volume.

When Sculptra (PLLA) is injected into the body, it serves as a framework or template for new collagen to grow and fill the empty spaces within the scaffold. Over time, Sculptra breaks down and is absorbed by the body, leaving behind a newly-formed network of collagen that helps to restore volume and structure to the treated area.

What are the Benefits of Sculptra?

Sculptra provides several benefits, making it a popular choice over traditional fat grafting procedures. One major advantage of Sculptra is that it is a minimally-invasive treatment that can be performed in a medical office without the need for general anesthesia or significant downtime. Patients with busy lives can make an appointment on their lunch break and see a dedicated and skilled injector.

Another benefit of Sculptra is that it provides a more predictable and consistent outcome. With Sculptra, the clinician has more control over the amount of product used, the depth of injection, and the precise location of the treatment, which can result in a more customizable procedure and greater patient satisfaction.

Sculptra can treat various facial volume loss concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Sunken temples
  • Forehead lines
  • Brow restoration
  • Chin & jowls contouring
  • Scarring

It is also a proven option to correct chest wall soft tissue deformities after implant-based augmentation post-mastectomy. [3] Furthermore, Sculptra can benefit patients who may not have enough excess fat to harvest for fat grafting.

Sculptra provides a safe, effective, and versatile treatment option for individuals who want to achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance without surgery or a more invasive procedure.

Candidates for Sculptra

Sculptra is not recommended as a treatment for fine lines, such as those around the lips and eyes, as it is not a line filler. Sculptra is better suited for treating patients with global hollowing, deep folds and creases, scars, and general cheek wrinkling caused by fat loss. Sculptra provides a natural-looking rejuvenation over a larger surface area and is a good option for those looking for longer-lasting results.

The ideal candidate for Sculptra treatment may include people who have experienced volume loss due to various factors such as aging or weight loss or want to enhance their facial features without requiring invasive surgical procedures. Sculptra is a good option for those who desire long-lasting results and are willing to undergo a series of injections to achieve the desired outcome.

Sculptra may not be suitable for everyone. A consultation with a qualified healthcare provider is necessary to determine if it is the right treatment option for an individual’s unique needs and goals.

Preparing for Sculptra Injections in Berkeley

Before the injection session, it is recommended that you avoid taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as well as supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo biloba, for at least a week; this can help reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection sites.

You may also be advised to avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours before the treatment to minimize the risk of bleeding and swelling. Make sure to stay hydrated in the days leading up to your treatment and avoid exposure to excessive sun or heat, which can irritate the skin and affect the effectiveness of the treatment.

With proper preparation and care, Sculptra injections can safely and effectively achieve a more youthful and voluminous appearance.

The Sculptra Injection Procedure

The Sculptra injection procedure typically begins with applying a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to minimize discomfort. The area is then cleansed, and the Sculptra solution is injected in small amounts into the subdermal layer of the skin.

The injections are strategically placed to achieve the desired volumization and contouring effect. The number of injections and treatment sessions required will depend on the individual’s needs and goals.

After the injection, the treated area is gently massaged to distribute the Sculptra and ensure a smooth, natural-looking result. The entire procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes, and no downtime is required afterward.

Recovery After Sculptra Injections

The recovery after Sculptra injections is generally minimal. Patients may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites, but these usually resolve within a few days. Some patients may also experience tenderness or slight discomfort in the treated area, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Patients are typically able to resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure, but it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure for a few days. Remember to follow any post-treatment instructions your Nubo Spa practitioner provides to ensure optimal results and minimize potential side effects.

What are the Results of Sculptra?

Over time, as the Sculptra stimulates collagen production, patients will notice a gradual improvement in the treated areas, lasting up to two years or longer. In fact, a recent study conducted in Brazil found that after 36 months, 40% of patients demonstrated a lasting effect of Sculptra volumizing in the nasolabial fold. [4]

Patients undergoing a Sculptra treatment and experiencing volumization of their face often report feeling more confident and refreshed. The gradual volumization process allows for a more natural-looking result and can help to restore a more youthful appearance to the face. Patients may notice a fuller, plumper appearance in areas that have been treated, which can help to improve the overall contour of the face.
